Showcasing
This week the students of Simonds School participated in the annual Simonds Talent Show.  What a great opportunity for our students to showcase their diverse and exciting talents!  With everything from tricks on trampolines to song and dance performances, the students wowed the audience with their great abilities.  This annual event is a fun way to celebrate some of the gifts that we don't always get to focus on during the normal school day.  It was also a great time of school community as the students congratulated and celebrated each other.  The students at Simonds School certainly do have talent!

Electricity
The supplies were distributed, the groups assigned, and the challenge was given: make the light bulb light up.  This week the fourth grade scientists explored simple circuits.  As a first introduction to electricity and how circuits work, the fourth graders were given some opportunity to explore with this hands-on challenge.  Some groups were able to apply some prior knowledge and complete the task fairly easily, while other groups approached the challenge with a "trial and error" mentality.  In the end, all the groups were able to make their bulb light up.  What an exciting moment when the students first complete their simple circuit.  We will continue to build on these concepts as we explore electricity in depth in the coming weeks.

Searching
The fourth grade writers are continuing in the search for information.  This week we added to our growing notes on our research topics.  The students are becoming increasingly more independent and proficient at searching for resources, both physical and digital.  They are learning how to record the bibliographic information to give their source credit.  And, they are learning all kinds of interest facts about their topics.  Once we have finished our research and have begun compiling it, we will certainly have some very interesting and detailed research projects to share!

Respect and Kindness
This week the leadership team from the Kearsarge Regional Middle School stopped by Simonds School to lead our students in a discovery of respect and kindness.  The experience was a mixture of fun activities and serious discussions.  In the end, the third, fourth, and fifth graders at Simonds School had learned more about respect and kindness.  These lessons have a great impact on our students because they are coming from older students who are excellent models of kids who can both have fun and be respectful and kind members of a school community.

Revolutionary
As a way of introducing our upcoming social studies unit on the American Revolution, the fourth graders welcomed a special guest to our classroom this week.  Ms. Sue Fonte, a former teacher from Simonds School came back to share some of her impressive knowledge about the American Revolution and the history of Colonial America.  Using her story-telling abilities mixed with amazing historical details, Ms. Fonte helped history come to life for our fourth graders.

Metered Measurement
Our work with measurement continued this week in mathematics.  Instead of exploring customary units like inches, pounds, and cups, we moved into the metric system of measurement.  In some ways, the metric system is much more "kid-friendly" because the rules for conversion stay the same.  The students were excited to find the pattern of the metric system, which is basically the same as our base-ten number system.  This week we explored how to measure length with meters, capacity with liters, and mass with grams.  We also learned a bit about making conversions in the metric system by multiplying or dividing by a power of ten.  As we conclude this foundational study of different units of measure, we look forward to our next topic in which we will be asked to apply this measurement knowledge to hands-on measurement challenges.
In Search of Clues
The fourth grade readers are going in search of clues.  As we continue to practice making inferences while we read narratives, this week we focused on finding evidence from the text to support our ideas.  It is exciting to see the students using multiple comprehension strategies together to get to a deeper understanding of the text.  As we read texts that are progressively more complicated, it is beneficial to have a variety of comprehension strategies at our disposal.  Making inferences is becoming second nature to many of the fourth grade readers, which means their reading experience will become more deep and rich.  In a room full of enthusiastic readers, it is exciting to see how these comprehension strategies are making the reading experience that much more enjoyable!  The trick now is finding a strategy for getting the students to put their bookmarks in...
Brilliant!
Our study of energy has lead us to some en"light"ening discoveries this week.  As we delved deeper into energy, this week we discovered that light is a special kind of energy.  We learned some important vocabulary about how light energy works: it is reflected, refracted, and absorbed.  After reading and watching how light energy works, it was time for the fourth grade scientists to explore light in a hands-on activity.  Using a variety of different tools, including flashlights, mirrors, glasses, and prisms, the fourth graders created their own "light obstacle course."  These courses were the way that the fourth graders demonstrated their understanding of light energy.  After much planning, we were able to present our obstacle courses to each other.  We pulled the blinds, shut off the lights, and enjoyed some very exciting lights displays.  These fourth grade scientists did a great job of creatively demonstrating their understanding of light energy in action.  Brilliant!
Resourceful
As the fourth grade writers begin to dig more deeply into their research projects, we have spent time this week looking for resources.  We have already learned the importance of finding sources to support our ideas, and so this week we took time to pick out the "just right" sources.  What excitement we felt when we found a website, book, magazine, or video that gave us the information we had been searching for!  These researchers have certainly proven  themselves to be committed and resourceful in their search for information for their research projects!

Conversion Quandary
In our continued explorations of measurement, this week the fourth grade mathematicians discovered the challenge that is converting.  As we began our study of measurement with the customary units of measure, we started our work with converting inches to feet, pounds to ounces, and cups to quarts.  With so many different conversions to remember, this week we worked to create our own conversion "cheat sheets" to help us with our conversion questions.  Although this is one of the more challenging and complicated mathematical adventures we've been on so far this year, it is also one that is easily applicable to our everyday lives.  The fourth graders did a great job practicing conversions with genuine data, like converting their height in inches to feet.  As we turn our attentions to the metric system next week, it will be fun to see how this system makes conversion much easier!
Knowing a Character
Making inferences is our on-going reading comprehension strategy.  This week we combined our knowledge of text features of narratives with our skills as reading detectives.  We took the clues we had collected about characters and built inferences about these interesting personalities.  As good readers, we are learning how to get to know a character using the "making inferences" strategy to collect clues and build ideas that aren't directly stated in the text.  In this way we are able to "read between the lines" and form a better understanding of the text.  What fun we have had in getting to know the interesting characters in our books!

Energy is Everywhere
The fourth grade scientists were busy at work this week discovering energy.  We started out the week by identifying the many different types of energy that exist.  From electricity to nuclear energy, the fourth graders followed along with a great read aloud entitled The Shocking Truth About Energy to get a basic introduction to the world of energy.  From here, we took an inventory of our everyday lives.  We identified the many different times that we use energy.  From the cereal that we eat in the morning to the computers we use at school to the heat that warms our homes, we discovered that energy is a big part of our lives.  In the coming weeks we will explore a few types of energy more in depth.  These scientists are ready to dig in and get their hands on this exciting energy exploration!
Lasts

Unbelievably, we have officially entered the last quarter of fourth grade.  It is hard to imagine where the time has gone.  As we look forward to a spring quarter full of all kinds of lasts, we also have much to learn and discover.  In the coming weeks and months it will be essential for the fourth graders to continue to dig deeply into their learning and develop their work ethics.  We want to finish the year well and be prepared for the new adventures awaiting us in fifth grade.  If any families want to meet to discuss progress in fourth grade over the past three quarters, please feel free to let me know!
